News Articles July 2004 2002 Ag Census data for Christmas Trees is discussed in American Christmas Tree Journal (July ’04). “Christmas Trees were added to the federal agriculture census in 1997 . . . While the 1997 data yielded some insight into our industry, there was some confusion between cut Christmas Trees, B&B Christmas Trees and conifer trees used for landscaping. Acres harvested for our industry posed another challenge, since respondents were unsure how to report Choose & Cut fields that were only partially harvested in any given year.” Christmas Tree questions were reworked “which has resulted in 2002 census data . . . that gives us much improved insight into the industry. However, . . . it is not statistically valid to compare the 2002 data with that from 2004.” Production Number Validates Wirthlin Data reports American Christmas Tree Journal (July ’04). “The ag census put 2002 sales of U.S. grown Christmas Trees at 20.8 million. Given annual imports of 2.3 – 2.7 million from Canada, and a modest number of exports, one would expect sales within the United States to be in the range of 22 to 22 million trees. The 2002 Season Consumer Poll, conducted by Wirthlin Worldwide, Inc. on behalf of NCTA, pegged that season’s consumer purchases at 22.3 million. . . . Thus, the two independent studies . . . put 2002 sales at virtually the same level.”
